It’s almost certainly worse than it looks. The inflation rate is high enough to prompt the Fed to resume raising interest rates. But the inflation rate feels even higher than the 3.4% most recently reported.
One reason is the algorithms, junk fees and all the other ways we are getting ripped off. We’re running a guest commentary (see below) on those fees and the need to rein them in.
While the commentary doesn’t address it specifically, the subject reminds me that some expert-texperts have noted those charges and fees and pricing jiggery-pokery happen and shift and adjust far faster than traditional means of measuring inflation can keep up with. There have always been doubts about how inflation is measured, usually based on which goods and services are included in the measurement — and which ones aren’t. Add the advent of a terrible junk fee/algorithm ripoff economy to the mix, and there’s reason to believe we actually don’t know how to accurately measure inflation anymore.
IN NEVADA CURRENT
Earlier this week I asked if anyone still refers to Summerlin as Yuppy Scummerlin. Now I ask if anyone still refers to Henderson as Hooterville. It’s a fair question! Michael Lyle reports: Former police chief hopes to oust incumbent in Henderson mayor race
This is not the first story this election year about an opponent openly singling out a specific judge they want to run against. Another intriguing look at a judge race from Dana Gentry: Prosecutor challenges incumbent judge in Clark County District Court Department 29
Modern scourge. “They trap us in subscriptions, bury fees until checkout, use algorithms to collude with competitors, and mine our personal data to charge us the most we’re willing to pay.” The aforementioned column, via OtherWords. Corporations keep finding new ways to gouge us. Our laws must catch up.
Via Stateline:
States OK solar panels for balconies. Safety guidelines haven't caught up. We should probably be doing this, no?
Governors pledge to oppose federal overreach — even when their party runs Washington. Well, some governors.
Good Luck
