Some Assembly required

Being CCEA. The Clark County Education Association, or at least its leadership, is canoodling with Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, enabling the governor’s Trump-adjacent agenda in return for, well, money — or the promise of it. In fact, April’s excellent Assembly overview story below notes that Lombardo’s opponent in the governor’s race is not the only Democrat CCEA is spending money against. For instance, the union’s also helping to bankroll an attack ad on a Clark County School District teacher and Democratic Assembly candidate who is a member of the CCEA. 

So that’s gross.

I’m reminded of the first time I paid any attention to the union’s perversely transactional leader, John Vellardita, and the casual disregard for which he holds the social and economic well-being of the families of students taught by his union’s members. It was several years ago in 2017, and CCEA was claiming the mantle of “social justice” — while running an ad calling on Democratic legislators to drop legislation to raise the state’s minimum wage. 

Now the union is attacking one of their own to help get a Republican elected — in the age of Trump, mind. That may seem like curious, even depraved, behavior for an organization that once claimed to champion social justice. But for Vellardita’s CCEA, it’s just another day that ends in y.
