Trump’s TPS hit to Nevada

Gas prices are back to about $5 in Southern Nevada, and are a quarter more in Northern Nevada. So that sucks.

But if prior results indicate future performance, the U.S. Supreme Court will let Trump start building his monstrosity of an arch first, and then maybe meekly ask questions later.

So congratulations to the slight majority — but a majority nonetheless — of Nevada voters who cast their ballots for Trump in 2024. “When I’m president I will focus primarly on my tacky vanity construction projects while letting both the economy and U.S. credibility abroad go to hell in handbasket” may not have been a promise Trump made on the campaign trail. But he’s doing it anyway.

Another Trump assault on the Nevada economy. “We have thousands of TPS members that are Culinary union members. Many of them, like our Salvadorian brothers and sisters, have been here for decades and have children, grown kids. They have homes. They pay taxes, and they’re critical to our economy here in Las Vegas,” said the Culinary Union’s Ted Pappageorge. Economic development dogma. There’s very little daylight between Lombardo and Ford on economic policy, and for each of them, data centers are a one-off in which they're scrambling to catch up to strong bipartisan public opinion. As politicians often do, they're following, not leading. Whichever one of them wins, don't expect to hear them say Tesla, pro sports teams, or any of the many other non-data center recipients of Nevada tax breaks and subsidies are, to borrow the phrase in Lombardo’s ad, “taking money from our schools.” Even though they are. Note/correction: In yesterday’s newsletter lines on this subject, I clumsily compared some Census Bureau apples to some Census Bureau oranges and reported the wrong number for the median household income in the city of Las Vegas. I wrote it was about $8,000 less than the national median, but it’s $2,100 less.

Ugh. One of the proposed projects mentioned in this story is up the river near the Glen Canyon Dam, and another one is just outside the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation northeast of Reno.
