Kamala Harris was in Las Vegas yesterday. For some Friday fun, I brought altar ego Idle Speculator out of retirement to see what likely would have happened had she won in 2024…
Her inability to get legislation passed in a Republican-controlled Congress would have been accompanied by a shutdown near the end of last year, albeit not as long as the ones we got with Trump.
Medicaid would not have been cut.
Extended ACA subsidies would have survived, but would have been at least partially scaled back.
Similarly, Republicans would have forced more stringent SNAP eligibility requirements, though they wouldn't be as draconian as those passed by Trump and Republicans last summer.
"No tax on tips" would have been enacted and the subminimum wage would have been eliminated.
Support for Ukraine would would have been funded far more generously, consistently, and responsibly than under Trump, with substantial Republican support.
Gas in Las Vegas would be less than $3.50 a gallon (and less than $3 nationally).
Congressional Republicans, at Trump's direction, would have mounted multiple investigations of alleged executive branch corruption, cronyism, graft, and incompetence, and pursued them just as assiduously as they are ignoring all those things now.
The stock market would be about the same as it is now, but would have got there without the Liberation Day nosedive and the Iran War whipsawing.
Inflation would be under 2%.
The Strait of Hormuz would be open.
And because the party of the president almost always gets creamed in midterms, Republicans would be poised to increase their congressional majorities in this year's election, while Nevada Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo would be sailing smoothly to a second veto-packed term.
And that ends today's deep thoughts with Idle Speculator. Thanks for playing.
IN NEVADA CURRENT
As per an above-referenced item... The impact of Trump’s tax and spending will not be confined to Medicaid, but will ripple throughout the entire Nevada healthcare system, from hospital operating costs to patient wait times, administrators said. Matthew Mondschein reports: Not just Medicaid: Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill will strain all NV healthcare, lawmakers told
This is that obscure job that was held by that guy who killed reporter Jeff German. And there's a lot going on here. Dana Gentry reports: Telles associate, real estate agent removed from probate case, among Dems for public administrator
Psst, the electorate is in a foul mood. Few people have "Lee loses primary" on their Nevada midterm bingo cards, I'm guessing. And yet, "Democratic voters sick of Democratic elected officials" is on a lot of bingo cards. April Corbin Girnus reports: Cardiologist primaries Lee, argues Trump era is ‘not the time’ for moderates
Drip, drip, drip... 'Tis a narrow, limited ruling. But every little bit helps. Ashley Murray reports: Another court ruling blocks Trump’s tariffs
