“Stay the course” was a Ronald Reagan campaign slogan when he was seeking reelection in 1984.

More than four decades later, inasmuch as Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo’s reelection campaign has an economic message, that message could be fairly described as: stay the course.

But in 1984, the consumer sentiment index had reached 100 for the first time since 1966.

Last month, thanks almost entirely to the policies of Trump, for whom Lombardo is a defender and an apologist, the index was 48 — the lowest ever recorded.

Little wonder then that even though affordability is by far the issue voters care most about, it’s not the issue the Lombardo team is showcasing as the 2026 election cycle enters the home stretch. Instead, the Lombardo team is harkening back to another legacy Republican narrative: The Democratic opponent is a Black man who coddles Black criminals.

At this point in time, amid all that’s going on, that’s the message the Lombardo team has determined Nevada voters most deserve.
