You can’t eat AI either. “You can’t eat GDP,” goes the old saying about the folly of assuming a statistically growing economy means more prosperity in working households. Gross domestic product seems an especially poor measurement of workforce financial stability now, given that the biggest contributors to GDP growth are a) spending on data centers and related AI-driven capital expenditures, and b) rich people buying stuff.

Put another way, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis announced this morning that GDP grew at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter, so does that make life feel more affordable? No? Dang.

Alaska harshes Democrats’ buzz. The campaign of Alaska Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola deliberately hunted to find a dude with the same name as the Republican incumbent to plop on the ballot in an effort to befuddle voters and dilute the Republican’s vote, according to a New York Times report yesterday.

Evidently that’s not illegal.

But it’s cheesy. And stupid. And if Democrats don’t end up taking control of the Senate because they lose in Alaska, the only thing missing would be if the Peltola campaign’s jiggery-pokery had been announced by James Comey.

By the way, such phony-baloney hijinx is not exactly unique — MAGAfolk are running as “sham” Green Party candidates in an effort to dilute the vote for Democratic candidates in Arizona. And here in Nevada, while they may not have concocted it a la AK, some Republicans are trying to boost the novelty/vanity gubernatorial candidacy of nonpartisan Daniele Ford, so as to draw votes away from Democratic candidate Aaron Ford.

IN NEVADA CURRENT

Tales from the Nevada way. “The stark reality is that Jon Ponder is a prolific sexual predator” who “cultivated relationships with some of the most powerful people in this community and in this state,” the prosecutor said at a hearing Wednesday. Dana Gentry reports: Ponder ‘a prolific sexual predator’ says prosecutor as judge lowers bail

“Her words, ‘Sí se puede,’ were never just a slogan. They were a call to action that inspired generations of Latinos, women, workers, and community leaders to stand up and demand a seat at the table.” Micheal Lyle reports: Nevadans pay tribute to civil rights and labor trailblazer Dolores Huerta

Nevada is one of the nine. The groups’ lawsuit came as Homeland Security asked for an emergency order to restart election-related field operations in nine states after a federal judge paused them over concerns they could sweep up U.S. citizens. Jonathan Shoreman reports: DHS targeting naturalized Americans in voter investigations, civil rights groups say

And the costs were already a lot to begin with… Costs are soaring for people who care for their older parents and other family members, according to a new study. Via Stateline: Caring for aging parents is getting more expensive
