Newt lite? Some of you may recall in the 2012 presidential cycle, former Republican House Speaker and architect of the 1994 Republican Revolution Newt Gingrich ran for president, and everybody, including Gingrich, thought it was just a publicity stunt so he could promote a book he had written.

But evidently nobody had let the late Las Vegas hotel-casino magnate and Republican megadonor (later a MAGAdonor) Sheldon Adelson in on the joke. Adelson started throwing obscene amounts of money into the race on Gingrich’s behalf. Gingrich took the lead in the polls, and actually won the South Carolina primary. Alas, eventually, and no doubt to Gingrich’s enormous relief, his publicity stunt masquerading as a presidential campaign petered out, as the Founders intended.

But it re-propelled him back into the spotlight so he could prosper by spreading Republican talking points for a living. 

So why do I bring this up? 

Marty O’Donnell (see below), who is running for Congress (yes, in Nevada), is apparently something of a media celebrity in the video game subculture, and seems to have spent as much time during this campaign season playing culture war in corners of the manosphere as campaigning for Congress in Nevada. It makes me wonder if O’Donnell is some sort of budget version of Gingrich, not really running for Congress as much as bolstering his media brand.

The largest US school districts restrict student AI use. The Los Angeles Unified School District is barring student use of generative AI on school-issued devices for the current school year, while New York Mayor Zohran Momdani said “The tech industry wants us to believe that A.I.-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary…We do not see it that way.” Via Stateline.
