It’s a very Monday-ish Tuesday, if you ask me.
IN NEVADA CURRENT
Democracy in action More than 52,600 Nevadans had already cast ballots for the June primary as of late last night, and the number is rising in real time as additional mail ballots arrive and are processed by counties. This morning we’ve got a look at the early early numbers, as well as some handy voter resources and important dates to remember: Early voting (and vote by mail) now underway for June primary
A Nevada Secretary of State’s Office media release the other day casually mentioned that Carson City has zero nonpartisan races on its primary ballot. That means if you’re not a registered Republican or Democrat you have zilch to do there. And what will nonpartisans in my swingy Southern Nevada neighborhood see at the top of their mail ballot? … A district court judicial race with three candidates they likely have never heard of, except maybe they have heard of the one candidate who’s running billboards and flyers with a very Saul Goodman type catchphrase on them. The one person on nonpartisan voters’s ballot they may have heard of — Sheriff Kevin McMahill; he’s on the news sometimes! — is running unopposed. Is it any wonder voter turnout is abysmal for primaries?
Reminder: The Nevada Current’s 2026 Primary Election Guide is here to help. It's not like the other guides. It's a cool guide, with lots of stories on judicial races.
America the Beautiful “This Memorial Day we need to seriously consider whether our actions and voices in this democratic republic are debasing or honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Are we guilty of taking the rights and privileges we enjoy for granted? Or worse yet, of totally abdicating our responsibility to continue to protect and preserve them?” A thoughtful commentary, originally published by our sibling pub the Missouri Independent: Memorial Day asks what kind of America we are willing to defend
Indefinite incarceration or…? Stateline takes a look at the latest data from the Data Deportation Project, which shows voluntary departures spike as immigrants face squalid detention, pressure to leave.
Bonus non-Nevada news: This story about out of Washington state is interesting. Generic warnings from their rental association aside, it appears the sky there hasn’t fallen after the imposition of a cap on residential rent rate increases.
