Bad idea: Suspending driver's licenses for being poor

Is there such a thing as too much campaign money? Nevada candidates are supposed to file their 2nd quarter campaign finance reports by midnight tonight. I keep wondering how hard Aaron Ford's campaign will try to use Joe Lombardo’s greatest strength against the governor, and judo throw Lombardo's massive campaign fundraising advantage into a damning narrative of a governor bought, paid for, and wholly owned by special interests. I know, I know — candidates try do that against their opponents all the time, usually with peripheral at best impact. If Ford’s campaign were to pull it off successfully, which is to say victoriously, that would be literally exceptional. But then, so is the collective campaign cash fortune being amassed by Lombardo & the PACs that have been built to keep him around.

Whoops. When the state decriminalized traffic tickets several years ago, conflicting legislative language inadvertently led to thousands of people getting their driver’s licenses suspended for unpaid traffic fines. Taking driver’s licenses away from people who are struggling to get by not only digs them and their households deeper into trouble, it’s a drag on the economy and the rest of the community. And the number of people whose licenses have been suspended is rather large. So this needs fixed. “Almost 3 million acres, going to be well taken care of now,” Trump decreed. Industry-folk complaining about burdensome environmental regulations and/or public land being spared from development in the name of conservation can be tiresome, but their complaints are at least understandable: they want to make money from public lands. And Trump likes to be friendly with industries — except of course when he's bossing them around or forcing them to accept a government ownership stake like a common authoritarian thug.
